Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
One thing that was mentioned previously, sort of. PV had talented teams in previous years, but also at that point, how many state titles were there? We talk about how many PV has won since he has been there, but there are also more state titles available now. There was a few years when PV won that Clintwood or Haysi or Honaker or others in the same size range had very good teams, and may have won a state title themselves if they had managed to get by PV, the same issue that PV had some previous years back before Phil.
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
You don't need to even look at state titles to gauge Phil's success at PV.
Before Phil (BP) - 141 wins in 25 years / 5.64 wins per year.
One distrisct title in 25 years.
After Phil (AP) - 228 wins in 24 years / 9.5 wins per year.
11 district title (could be 1 or 2 more, I can count 11 of them but may have missed 1 or 2).
If Phil had 141 wins and 1 state crown instead of 228 wins and 7 titles this thread wouldn't exist, the unreasonable hate towards him wouldn't exist, and some folks would have to find a different boogeyman for their imaginations to work overtime on.
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
I didn't see why people were freaking out about that comment. I basically got the same thing out of it that mike_jones did.
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
Guys that is just Phil. In all honesty he is probably just sitting back eating it all up.
I don't think anyone is saying he is a bad coach.
I think most just get tired of the arrogant and unneeded comments.
Had someone said that about PV. What would be said?
Known the man a long time.
He is like a kid in some ways. A good coach. But one who will take his ball and go home if he don't get his way.
That's just Phil.
You get past that and get to where you can talk to him. He can be ok.

Welcome to the forum, Coach Robbins...
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
I don't gauge success on just his wins, he coaches at the High School level. He needs to be kind of viewed not just on his wins but how he teaches/molds/shapes the kids under him.
Again, the comparison to Kilmer in the movie Varsity Blues. Kilmer won, it was about titles. He always won, and sure there was the kids who loved him (Billy Bob), the ones who wouldn't dare speak against him, those he loved, and it wasn't until the veil of him being the 'great coach' was lifted, that some of the others started looking bigger picture. Oh sure, there are some on here that love the man, there are some former players that love the man, but there are also quite a few that wouldn't spit on him if he was on fire.
Gotch, you know just as well as I do, if Coach Colobro was asked how PV would do after they were beaten by PV and he said well they were good enough to lose to Haysi, every single person from PV would not be talking about how great of a coach Colobro was on here and such, his records, his wins wouldn't matter, it would be how could he talk about PV like that. It would be about how craphole that was, how poor of behavior that was, etc, but yet you're on here trying to stand up for the man and defend him?
That's what I always love, when things like that are said/done, step out of looking at it with the Baby Blue blinders on and look at it how it would be IF it was said about your team, not from your team.
I don't like Phil. I think he does think that the successes at PV are all due to him or at least a lot more. It's funny, when coaches are talking, they'll tell you that all they can do is coach the players up, put them in the right places, but the players have to make the plays. Well they'll say this when you've lost, or struggling, and most coaches will say its the players or admit that all they do is get them in the right places to make the plays. I think Phil thinks its the players fault when they lose, its due to him when they win. The ego doesn't really have an off switch. I can respect the results that Phil has had, but a good portion of the former players will talk about Phil and comments like this as "Oh that's just Phil". Yes, that's just Phil. That doesn't make it right, but it's an accepted excuse.
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
everyone judges a book by its cover u shouldn't do that
i think that most people that hates phil if you would hang out with him or talk to him u would think he's a good person. U just don't know what goes on in bsg (how he helps families out) to me that is a good person.
And when he coached at all them other schools he didnt' have near the talent that he has at POWELL VALLEY
we will find out in the next 3 years how good of a coach he is.
COACHING IS NOT JUST A JOB FOR HIM ITS A HOBBY BECAUSE HE JUST LOVES THE GAME OF FOOTBALL!!
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
Not judging a book by his cover, judging a book by interaction I, as long as some others I know, have had with him. He may be the Patron Saint of the Poor in BSG, and if he is, thats great. I don't know what goes on in BSG with all families, but I know there have been more than a few ex-players, family members of ex-players who have had no kind words for him.
You'll find out how good of a coach he is the next 3 years? So, PV is going to have a lot less talent that he is going to mold into winners? I thought it was that PV was going to have a lot of talent that had already been winning, so if they were already winning, how does them winning with him prove how good he is?
Re: Virginia preps regarding Phil Robbins
Now there's an unbiased opinion... A senior Powell Valley linebacker who keeps on bringing up all-district/all-region topics (now, during the season & even before the season started) in hopes of being mentioned on this messageboard decides to give his head coach "props" right before the all-district/all-region selections are made. Somebody tell Ethan how great a football player he was so he can leave study hall with his chest stuck out proudly!
Unbiased comments, yeah right...
